Our primary grade elementary students spend their days with their classroom teacher learning what it means to be a student and a child of God! They have five academic subject areas each day – Math, Science, Social Studies, Religion, and Language Arts (reading, writing, phonics, and spelling). They also attend an enrichment class daily – PE, art, or music.
Since these are the first years of formal schooling for our children, we choose to use an alternative grading system for them, which is a combination of attribute grades and academic grades. The academic grading scale is not the typical A,B,C grading scale, but instead gives a more clear indicator of the students’ efforts in learning by using marks like VG for Very Good, or S for Satisfactory.
The students also use the computer lab to work on Lexia (a phonics-based reading program), STAR Math and Reading, and Rosetta Stone. In Rosetta Stone students are able to study one of 24 available languages, including things like Spanish, French, and Chinese.
In these grades the students are getting the strong foundation they need to be successful as they continue in their educational careers.
